Our Story

Sumitra Samajik Kalyan Sansthan began its journey in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, in 1993.

The organisation emerged from a commitment to work closely with communities facing persistent barriers to health, livelihoods and essential services.

Over the years, Sumitra’s programmes have evolved in response to changing community needs. Its work has included public health and HIV prevention, women’s collectives and livelihoods, adolescent and reproductive health, water and sanitation, agriculture and support for migrant and worker populations.

Throughout this journey, one principle has remained constant: sustainable progress depends on strong communities, capable local institutions and meaningful connections with public systems.

Today, Sumitra brings more than three decades of community-level experience to partnerships across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
