Journey So Far
Sumitra Samajik Kalyan Sansthan (SSKS) is an organisation striving to address marginalisation and vulnerabilities of poorest sections of the society in underserved areas of the country. SSKS is working in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for over 24 years, focussing on empowerment, poverty alleviation and social exclusion. The organisation is aiming to work with lowest strata of the socio-economic pyramid.
The organisation was started by a group of social activists and development professionals with an aim to bring about overall development of the poorest and marginalised sections of society. It commenced operations in 1993 in Hamirpur district of Bundelkhand region of India. The early days of the organisation were spent in community mobilisation, organising women and youth, capacity building and empowerment of poor and marginalised groups with focus on Dalits and Women.
SSKS works towards building a society where all people can gain access over basic services such as health, education, water and sanitation and credit, and assert as well as realise their full potential. The organisation has worked towards ensuring access over entitlements by influencing development service providers and representatives of panchayati raj institutions at local level. The organisation is also working with district and state level functionaries towards institutional development and converging with different departments for resource mobilisation.
